SELF at 2026 WACS Annual Meeting

SELF will host a coordinated set of activities during the 2026 WACS Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana. Rather than a single standalone event, SELF will be active across the meeting week, offering multiple points of engagement for faculty, educators, and module developers.

Across the week, activities will include an open introduction to SELF and assessment approaches, informal developer support during the Annual Meeting, a paediatric surgery working group, and a focused Assessment Workshop aligned with WACS priorities. Together, these engagements are designed to support the development of simulation-based training, strengthen collaboration across Colleges, and advance practical, evidence-based approaches to assessment.

SELF organisera un ensemble d’activités coordonnées lors de la réunion annuelle 2026 de la WACS à Accra, au Ghana. Plutôt qu’un événement unique, SELF sera présent tout au long de la semaine de la réunion annuelle, offrant plusieurs points d’engagement aux enseignants, formateurs et développeurs de modules.

Les activités comprendront une session d’introduction ouverte à SELF et à l’évaluation, un soutien informel aux développeurs pendant la réunion annuelle, un groupe de travail en chirurgie pédiatrique et un atelier d’évaluation approfondi en lien avec les priorités de la WACS. Ces initiatives visent à soutenir la formation par simulation, à renforcer la collaboration entre collèges et à promouvoir des approches d’évaluation pratiques et fondées sur des données probantes.

Introduction to SELF and Assessment Approaches

This open, orientation-style session introduces participants to the SELF program and highlights how assessment is designed and used within SELF training modules. The session is intended for faculty, educators, and developers seeking shared context on SELF and its relevance to assessment within the WACS.

The session is open to all WACS Annual Meeting participants and is designed as an accessible introduction and program update. It provides common grounding for those interested in assessment and serves as a natural entry point for participants who will go on to take part in the WACS Assessment Workshop later in the week.

Cette séance d'orientation ouverte présente le programme SELF aux participants et explique la conception et l'utilisation de l'évaluation au sein des modules de formation SELF. Elle s'adresse aux enseignants, formateurs et concepteurs de programmes souhaitant acquérir une compréhension commune du programme SELF et de sa pertinence pour l'évaluation au sein du WACS.

Ouverte à tous les participants à la réunion annuelle du WACS, cette séance se veut une introduction accessible et une mise à jour du programme. Elle offre une base commune à tous ceux qui s'intéressent à l'évaluation et constitue un point d'entrée idéal pour les participants qui suivront l'atelier d'évaluation du WACS plus tard dans la semaine.

Assessment Workshop

12–13 February | 09:00-16:00 | AH Hotel

The WACS Assessment Workshop will bring together faculty responsible for examinations and assessment across the College, with a focus on practical, evidence-based approaches to evaluating confidence and competence in surgical training.

Over two days, participants will explore assessment methods used within the SELF program, including self-administered skills assessment and ENTRUST, a virtual patient simulation platform designed to assess clinical decision-making. Through shared cases and facilitated discussion, the workshop will examine how these approaches can complement existing WACS examinations and support the College’s broader assessment strategy.

Approximately 40 participants are expected. Sessions will be offered in both English and French. A detailed agenda will be shared with registered participants.

Lunch will be provided.

L'atelier d'évaluation du WACS réunira les enseignants responsables des examens et de l'évaluation au sein du Collège, et se concentrera sur des approches pratiques et fondées sur des données probantes pour évaluer la confiance et les compétences en formation chirurgicale.

Pendant deux jours, les participants exploreront les méthodes d'évaluation utilisées dans le cadre du programme SELF, notamment l'auto-évaluation des compétences et ENTRUST, une plateforme de simulation de patients virtuels conçue pour évaluer la prise de décision clinique. À travers l'étude de cas concrets et des discussions animées, l'atelier examinera comment ces approches peuvent compléter les examens existants du WACS et soutenir la stratégie d'évaluation globale du Collège.

Environ 40 participants sont attendus. Les sessions seront proposées en anglais et en français. Un programme détaillé sera communiqué aux participants inscrits.

Paediatric Working Group of WACS & COSECSA

Led by Prof. Emmanuel Ameh, this working group will bring together paediatric surgeons from WACS and COSECSA to focus on simulation-based training for paediatric surgery and its integration into the Pan-African Paediatric Surgery Education Program (PAPSEP).

The session will convene faculty actively engaged in paediatric surgical education to explore how simulation-based approaches can support training pathways across the region.

Sous la direction du professeur Emmanuel Ameh, ce groupe de travail réunira des chirurgiens pédiatriques du WACS et du COSECSA afin d'aborder la formation par simulation en chirurgie pédiatrique et son intégration au Programme panafricain de formation en chirurgie pédiatrique (PAPSEP).

Cette session rassemblera des enseignants activement impliqués dans la formation en chirurgie pédiatrique pour examiner comment les approches basées sur la simulation peuvent enrichir les parcours de formation dans toute la région.

Developer Support

In addition to structured working groups, SELF will host informal developer support meetings throughout the conference. These are not scheduled workshops and do not follow a fixed agenda.

Instead, they are opportunities for surgeons and educators who are already developing SELF modules—or who are interested in doing so—to connect directly with the SELF team.

Developers will be able to discuss progress, troubleshoot challenges, and receive guidance through ad hoc conversations with Dr. Catherine Mohr and Dr. Fabrice Sodogas during the conference week.

These interactions are intended to support continuity of work already underway and to make it easier for developers to move their modules forward without additional planning or formal commitments.

En plus des groupes de travail structurés, SELF organisera des réunions informelles de soutien aux développeurs tout au long de la conférence. Il ne s'agit pas d'ateliers programmés ni d'événements à ordre du jour fixe.

Ces réunions offrent aux chirurgiens et aux formateurs qui développent déjà des modules SELF – ou qui souhaitent le faire – l'opportunité d'échanger directement avec l'équipe SELF.

Travel Policy

Travel support is provided for participants attending the Assessment Workshop and Paediatric Working Group held in conjunction with the 2026 WACS Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana. Participants are responsible for booking their own hotel accommodations, ground transportation, and meals unless otherwise noted.

Assessment Workshop Participants

Travel support for the Assessment Workshop is administered by the West African College of Surgeons and follows one of two policies:

  1. Participants traveling to Ghana specifically to attend the Assessment Workshop, and who would not otherwise attend the WACS Annual Meeting, are eligible for reimbursement of round-trip airfare and two nights of hotel accommodation.

  2. Participants who are already planning to attend the WACS Annual Meeting and who extend their stay in order to participate in the Assessment Workshop are eligible for reimbursement of two nights of hotel accommodation and airline change fees of up to USD $300 to cover the cost of adjusting their return travel.

Paediatric Working Group Participants

Travel support for the Paediatric Working Group is administered by SELF.

Participants in the Paediatric Working Group are eligible for reimbursement of round-trip airfare, two nights of hotel accommodation, and conference registration fees. Reimbursements are processed by SELF following the event.

L'aide financière pour l'atelier d'évaluation est gérée par le Collège des chirurgiens d'Afrique de l'Ouest (WACS) et est soumise à l'une des deux politiques suivantes :

  1. Les participants se rendant au Ghana spécifiquement pour assister à l'atelier d'évaluation, et qui ne participeraient pas autrement à la réunion annuelle du WACS, peuvent bénéficier du remboursement de leur billet d'avion aller-retour et de deux nuits d'hôtel.

  2. Les participants qui prévoient déjà d'assister à la réunion annuelle du WACS et qui prolongent leur séjour pour participer à l'atelier d'évaluation peuvent bénéficier du remboursement de deux nuits d'hôtel et des frais de modification de billet d'avion, à concurrence de 300 USD, pour couvrir les frais de modification de leur vol retour.

Participants au groupe de travail pédiatrique

L'aide financière pour le groupe de travail pédiatrique est gérée par SELF.

Les participants au groupe de travail pédiatrique peuvent bénéficier du remboursement de leur billet d'avion aller-retour, de deux nuits d'hôtel et des frais d'inscription à la conférence. Les remboursements sont traités par SELF après l'événement.
